How does CHP Define Relief?

Relief work in the context of the CHP includes developing food and healthcare access for refugees and those in the area during this time of disruption, working with and supporting local markets and institutions.  We also advocate for the Nippes area with food aid and disaster relief organizations.  The CHP’s immediate relief activities include enhancing our programs of feeding the children in the school, opening the school canteen to the broader St. Paul’s community for those in desperate need.  With additional resources, we are increasing and broadening the number and scope of CHP medical missions.  Repairing earthquake damage both improves the physical environment for the community and acts as relief by inserting funds into the local economy.  Further, our on site assessment will include listening to the people in the community about the relief that they perceive is necessary.

In the longer term, Haitian relief requires the restart of existing CHP programs in education, public health, and women's vocational training, as well as ramping up the development of an effective local agronomy program aimed at long term food security, and the development of vocational programs to provide the skills that will be necessary to develop the infrastructure for effective communities as Haiti rebuilds.
